Keep it, hesaid again and again, for simple contemplation and forprivate prayer, so that men and women may learn theinner meaning of the book, and become soaked withthe thought of Gods great Love so portrayed in its pages.This was his dying request, which I most earnestly praymay be observed, nor can I doubt but that the authoritieswill put his desires on record, lest they be transgressed,and so his sacrifice be robbed of its chief reward, whichwas to fulfil the wish of his beloved friend, and help to-wards a holy retreat for the refreshment of the soulsof men.

CHAPTER XXI Frederic Shields will—Personal recollections. It is perhaps a point of biographical interest to mentionthe terms of Frederic Shields will. To his friends thefact that he left a considerable sum of money was amatter of great surprise. Subject to the payment of afew small legacies, and a small annuity to his widow whosurvives him, but who had ceased to live with him formany years, the whole of his estate was bequeathed totwo foreign missionary societies. The grand cartoons, over seventy in number, executedfor the Duke of Westminsters windows, were left, undercertain conditions, to be presented at the discretion of hisexecutors, to some public institution which would under-take to frame and hang the entire series, the artist havingalways refused to divide or separate this magnificentgroup of designs.
