Whistle and Answer (i857) RAGGED SCHOOLS 51 to the School of Design. We find frequent references towork done there, principally drawing from the antique. Another picture, commenced in June, was a water-colour of children in a flowery field blowing dandelionseeds, entitled Whats oclock ? On June 8th the diaryrecords:— Letter from Edwin, God knows where I shall getmoney to send him, have but a shilling left. The struggle to live, and to support his unfortunatebrother, while endeavouring to carry on his pictures—whichbrought no immediate payment—was very severe duringthis year. Insufficient food and privation of every kindhad played havoc with what must have been an iron con-stitution, and the long hours of work, the solitary life, andnervous strain, combined to produce constant attacks ofweakness and pain.
