Text Appearing Before Image:
he asserts thatso effectual were the recommendations of General Jackson forthe reduction of the Tariff, with a view to the abandonment ofthe odious and unjust system, and so rapid the changes of publicopinion, that the friends of the Tariff, and even Mr. Clay, itsimputed father, seized on a favorable moment to save the wholefrom destruction by a timely compromise. It was the defenceof Mr. Clay, with his friends at the North, that by yielding apart, he prevented the destruction of the whole, and in theircontinued and devoted support of him, the Northern capitalistshave shown that they are grateful for the fortunate rescue. Here, then, is an answer to the charge of an abandonment of theTariff from the pen of James K. Polk himself, which ought tosilence the tongue of calumny forever, and to make the cheeksof his friends in this county tingle with very shame. But if thisbe not enough, we have the further declaration from the samesource, that if they (the people,) voted for him (Mr. Clay,)
Text Appearing After Image:
HIS TARIFF ADDRESS AND THE CLAY CAMPAIGN 211 they would be virtually voting for the Protective Tariff. Whatsay you to this, people of Allegheny? Mr. Polk and his friendshere are at issue. Which will you believe ? But they are at variance with him on another point. Whilein their zeal to destroy Mr. Clay, they have denounced the Com-promise Act as infamous/ and declared that they have alwaysbeen opposed to it, they have most strangely forgotten that itreceived the support of James K. Polk himself—though for avery different reason from that which he ascribes to Mr. Clay—and that he is even in favor of going back once more to itsmost odious provisions. Now if they are honest in the declara-tion of their opinions in regard to that Act, they must abandonhim, as a matter of course, on that ground. They cannot supporthim, and hope at the same time to preserve the confidence orrespect of their fellow men. And now as to the objection, that Mr. Clay is in favoronly of incidental protection.
