th an attentionthat could only come from the heart.1 After this first stay in Valence, where his love ofsociety kept him clear of those sordid adventures whichbut too often prove a lasting hindrance in a youngmans career, Napoleon went to Lyons, whither hisregiment had been dispatched to repress some dis-affection. Thence he proceeded to Douai. He sub-sequently applied for leave of absence and went toAjaccio. He passed through Marseilles some time inFebruary, 1787. Was it there that he first sawMadame Saint-Huberti, the eminent singer? MadamedAbrantes, who appears to have got her informationfrom M. Maret, affirms that it was. However thatmay be, Madame Saint-Huberti was then singing inDido with immense success. She shortly afterwardsmarried the Comte dAntraigues, the secret agent ofthe Bourbons at the time of the emigration, and ulti-mately died in London in 1812, being assassinated, together with her husband, by an Italian domestic. 1 Memoirs of the Duchesse dAbrantes, Vol. VI, p. 16.

Broadley, Esq* THE LOVE AFFAIRS OF NAPOLEON 13 It is alleged that the young lieutenant was so movedby her voice that he wrote some verses in her honourand sent them to her. Among her triumphs on theoperatic stage, Madame Saint-Huberti can not onlycount the distinction of reawakening the passion oflove in the great literary genius of the nineteenth cen-tury (Chateaubriand), but she also had the goodfortune, after playing in Dido, to inspire what wereprobably the only verses ever penned by the youngartillery officer who afterwards became Napoleon theFirst.1 Monsieur de Goncourt no doubt found these versesin the Memoires of Madame dAbrantes. The worthyduchess assures us that she can guarantee their authen-ticity. At all events, they read as follows :— Romains qui vous vantez dune illustre origine,Voyez dou dependait votre empire naissant: Dido
