his thoughts were directed towardsmaking her his wife, and he began to unmask hisbatteries. It was, of course, to Joseph, the diplomatof the family and the young ladys brother-in-law, thathe entrusted the conduct of the negotiations. He wrotehim on the 5th September: If I stay here I may betempted to make a fool of myself and get married.Just send me a line saying what you think about it;it might perhaps be as well to mention the matter toEugenies brother. Tell me what comes of it, and Iwill abide by the result. A days reflection confirmedhim in his resolve, for the very next day he says to hisbrother, Continue to keep me exactly informed. Tellme what you wish to do, and endeavour to arrangematters so that my absence may not hinder the attain-ment of the object I have at heart. This affair withEugenie must be settled one way or the other. I shallbe very anxious to get your reply.1 1 These letters are to be found in the Memoirs of the Comte deSurvilliers (King Joseph), Vol. I, passim.

MADAME MEREFrom the collection of A. M. Broadley, Esq. THE LOVE AFFAIRS OF NAPOLEON 29 And there the tale stops short. Time goes by, andthe question thus broached still remains unsolved. The truth is that Bonapartes matrimonial ideas wereundergoing some modification amid the surroundingsof Parisian society. He still thinks of marrying, butit has begun to dawn on him that the girl whom hehad thought of would be decidedly out of her elementin the sort of society he had begun to frequent. Hetold Junot, his aide-de-camp, who had asked for thehand of his sister Pauline, that he could not assentto seeing her marry an officer without money of hisown. The fact is that his horizon is extending. Heenters the mixed society of the Luxembourg, cultivatesBarras and visits the beautiful Citoyenne Tallien, theCitoyennes Mailly de Chateaurenault, de Navailles. . . .Ambition takes hold of him, and he perceives that bymeans of the influential connexions he has succeeded increating, he has it in his power
