The disas-ters that befel the unfortunate Charles I. and his final execution turnedthe attention of many a Royalist toward the new world. While Cromwellwas leading his army against the Scots at Dunbar, in 1650, the Sylvesters(there were five or six brothers, all of whom were wealthy merchants) wereresolutely preparing to leave the kingdom ; and when, on the 3d of Sep-tember, 165 1, Cromwell achieved his great victory over Charles II. at Wor-cester, they had already, nearly three months before, secured Shelter Island

Even therethey were not beyond the reach of the Cromwell government, and on sev-eral occasions were in great trouble. Constant Sylvester was arrested andimprisoned for a time as the leader of the loyalist faction. Madame Syl-vester, the mother, is on record in Barbadoes as asking that she might betreated as an Englishwoman, not as a Dutchwoman.
