early hour, and was keptupuntil about three oclock in the morning. Lafayette then proceeded to Albany, stopping at all the principalpoints on the Hudson. His movements were without waste of time, forhe had reached Philadelphia on the 27th of September. A journalistwrites from there : The reception of General Lafayette in this city wasbrilliant beyond all description. It has far exceeded public expectation.He arrived about eleven oclock (September 27), preceded by the com-mittee and corporation ; he was in an elegant barouche, with postilions andoutriders in rich and appropriate liveries, and drawn by six horses. Thestreets through which he passed presented one solid mass of population,and the houses were lined with beauty, taste, and fashion. The sasheswere taken out of the windows, so as to admit three or four ranges ofheads. The number of arches was immense, and they were elegant in theextreme. With the June rosesof 1825 he was again in New England. The following is an extract fromthe Boston, Centinel, June 18, 1825 : The celebration of the fiftieth anni-versary of the memorable battle of Bunker Hill, and the ceremony oflaying the foundation-stone of an obelisk to commemorate the great event,have taken place. As public journalists, it is our duty to record the pro-ceedings of the day; but we feel unable to do anything like justiceto the splendor of the scenes which passed, or to the excellent spirit andenthusiastic good-feeling which animated with an unanimous impulse anassemblage which it is believed to be no exaggeration to estimate at onehundred and fifty thousand, collected from every state in the Union.
