If itwere not for this tendency, combined with their greatmotive power, the two principles could not bebrought together. Their power of living out of thebody for some time is also necessary to impregna-tion, because they may not reach their destinationimmediately. It is found that they will live in thefemale organs, when these are healthy, as long astwenty-six hours, and of course during any part ofthat time conception may take place. Sometimesconception may take place in a few minutes, and atother times not till as many hours after the associa-tion of the two sexes. It has been found on dissect-ing an animal killed ten hours after connexion, thatthe semen had not even then reached the ovum,though it usually passes into the womb almost im-mediately.
