on, may be gathered fromthe botanical chapter in Sir H. H. Johnstons BritishCentral Africa. We must say a few words about the/auna of BritishCentral Africa, not only because it is interesting initself, but because it plays an important part in thelife and thought of the people. Elephants are lessnumerous than they were forty years ago, when herdsof them haunted the marsh to which they have giventheir name ; but they are still frequently seen betweenChikala and Mangoche, north-east of Lake Chilwa, andsince they have been protected by Government, haveeven been returning to the banks of the Shire. In1877 the late Consul Elton saw a herd of over threehundred near the north end of Lake Nyasa. The hippopotamus is found in the Shire and LakeNyasa, and indeed almost in any stream or lake wherethe water is deep enough to cover him. The rhino-ceros is known, but not very common. Such an animal, in 1894, chargedout of the long grass on a party of carriers, nearChiromo, and knocked down, gored and trampled on,one man, who was rescued from him with difficulty.This man, a Tonga named Kajawa, when treated atBlantyre, was found to have seventeen wounds abouthim, but ultimately recovered. Of other large animals, we have already mentionedthe zebra; and the eland, though not very common,is also met with. There are several kinds of smallerantelopes, and, in the mountains, the beautiful littlecreature called the klipspringer, or, by the natives,\h& gwapi, which is something like a chamois. Of monkeys, there are baboons, which go about introops and plunder the growing crops, when they get achance, and several smaller kinds.
