Length of this fpecies fourteen inches, breadth twenty-one, weightfifteen ounces. It is a common bird in this country, frequents thefides of rivers and ponds, and is fuppofed to feed on fmall fifh, and on plants. It has two or three broods in the fummer; the neft is ufuallyplaced on a low (lump near the water, and contains feven eggs of adirty white colour, fparingly fpeckled and fpotted with ruft colour,and nearly two inches in length. The female is fmaller than themale, the colours are throughout much paler, and the throat isfometimes white; in fome birds it is grey, in others the colour ofthe reft of the neck. PLATE Ill
