specimenshad the good fortune to go into the possessionof exhibitors who had the opportunity toattend a large number of shows, in whichthey figured successfully in variety classes.Of these some of the most noted have beenshown by Mr. F. H. Bottomley, whoseprefix Manorley is well known. Anothergood one is Ch. Southboro Seniority, nowthe property of Mr. L. Crabtree, though shehas probably seen her best days ; Mr. H. H.Taylors Fleetfoot, too, though not a cham-pion, has deservedly won scores of prizes ;while a comparatively new aspirant to famein this direction is Mr. W. Proctor, who hasrecently bought several good specimens ofthe breed, amongst which Lottie Hamptonhas made a decisive mark already by winningat some dozen or more shows. Theseowners, with Mr. W. Proudlove, are themore prominent northern exhibitors, butMr. J.J. Holgate must not be overlooked,for he invariably brings out somethingbetter than ordinary at the championshipshows. The late Mr. A. In some quarters the ideais prevalent that Whippets are delicate intheir constitution, but this is a popular error.Probably their disinclination to go out ofdoors on their own initiative when theweather is cold and wet may account for theopinion, but given the opportunity to roamabout a house the Whippet will find a com-fortable place, and will rarely ail anything.In scores of houses Whippets go to bedwith the children, and are so clean that evenscrupulous housewives take no objection totheir finding their way under the clothes tothe foot of the bed, thereby securing theirown protection and serving as an excellentfootwarmer in the winter months.
