ttingas near as they could, slipped the houndsand the race began. On the roughestground the strong-legged, hard-footed dogscould hold their own, while on the flat theyoverhauled their quarry. They stuckstaunchly to the chase, and when withinseizing distance would sometimes springat the leg in order to confuse and encumberthe stag until there came a better oppor-tunity of springing at the neck. If the stagstood at bay, woe betide the hound whosecourage led him to make a frontal attack ; forhe would surely pay for his valour with hislife or sustain terrible injuries. If, however, the attack was made from behind, the hunterwould generally come up to find the deerdead, while the hounds were unharmed.Their duty was not to kill their victim butto keep him at bay until the hunters arrived. Two historic feats of strength and en-durance illustrate the tenacity of the Deer-hound at work. These, of course, arerecord performances, but they demonstratethe possibilities of the Deerhound whentrained to his natural sport. In Scropes time driving was commnnlyresorted to in the extensive forests, butnowadays when forests are sub-dividedinto limited shootings the deer are seldommoved from their home preserves, whilstwith the use of improved telescopes and thesmall-bore rifle, stalking has gone out offashion. With guns having a muzzle velocityof 2,500 feet per second, it is no longernecessary for sportsmen stealthily to stalktheir game to come within easy range, andas for dogs, they have become so doubtfulan appendage to the chase that we havean experienced deerstalker like Cameronof Lochiel soberly putting the question : Ought d
