One of the first examples of the breedexhibited in England was owned by Messrs.Hill and Ashton, of Sheffield, about 1880,at which time good specimens were importedby the Rev. J. C. Macdona and LadyEmily Peel, whose Sandringham and Czarexcited general admiration. It was thenknown as the Siberian Wolfhound. Someyears later the Duchess of Newcastle ob-tained several fine dogs, and from this stockHer Grace founded the kennel which hassince become so famous. Later still, QueenAlexandra received from the Czar a giftof a leash of these stately hounds, one ofthem being Alex, who quickly achievedhonours as a champion.
