The best seen so far havebeen Mr. Winton Smiths Beechgrove Mal-lard, Mr. H. Jones Chorister and DivingBell, and Mr. Stansfelds Lucky Shot. Thelatter dog, despite his name, was unluckyin not being eligible for entry in the StudBook on account of an unknown pedigree,though he won at the Kennel Club Shows of1901 and 1902, and also at the Field Trials.The type of this breed is not very well fixedat present, being more or less in a transitionstage, and, although both the Spaniel Cluband the Sporting Spaniel Society publishdescriptions, it is rather hard to find aspecimen which quite fills the bill. The Astrakhan fur, everywhere except on hisface, where it should be short. There shouldbe no topknot like that of the Irish WaterSpaniel.
