ell by the difference ofthe note whether one of these dogs washunting fur or feather. In these days mute Spaniels are fashion-able, and it has been the custom amongField Trial judges to penalise a Spaniel whogives tongue. This is, I think, a mistake,as it is natural for some breeds to do so ;and I must say that to my ears the deepmelodious note of a Sussex Spaniel is amost pleasant sound, and not without itsuses, as one often brings off a shot, particu-larly at rabbits in thick covert, which onewould not have a chance of without thatwarning from ones four-footed companion.Several of Mr. Newingtons Sussex havecompeted, with considerable credit to them-selves, at the Field Trials, though the moreattractive work of the Clumbers and Spring-ers has prevented them attaining the high-est honours. A well-bred Sussex Spaniel is a veryhandsome dog. Indeed, his beautiful colouralone is enough to make his appearance anattractive one, even if he were unsym-metrical and ungainly in his proportions.
Text Appearing After Image:
THE SPORTING SPANIEL. 285 This colour, known as golden liver, ispeculiar to the breed, and is the great touch-stone and hall-mark of purity of blood. Noother dog has exactly the same shade ofcoat, which I do not think the word liver describes very exactly, as it is totally dif-ferent from the ordinary liver colour of anIrishman, a Pointer, or even a liver FieldSpaniel. It is rather a golden chestnutwith a regular metallic sheen as of bur-nished metal, showing more especially on thehead and face and everywhere where thehair is short. This is very apparent whena dog gets his new coat. In time, of course,it is liable to get somewhat bleached bysun and weather, when it turns almost yel-low. Every expert knows this colour well, and looks for it at once when judging a classof Sussex. The description of the breed given bythe Spaniel Club is as follows : 1. Head.—The skull should be moderately long, and also wide, with an indentation in the middle, and a full stop, brows fairly heavy ; occiput
