The Holy Fathers were more par-ticular about their markings than great size.The body colour should be brindle or orangetawny, with white markings; the muzzlewhite, with a line running up between theeyes, and over the skull, joining at theback the white collar that encircles the neckdown to the front of the shoulders. Thecolour round the eyes and on the ears shouldbe of a darker shade in the red ; in thecentre of the white line at the occiput thereshould be a spot of colour. These markingsare s.iid to represent the stole, chasuble andscapular which form part of the vestmentsworn by the Monks ; but it is seldom that the markings are so clearly defined ;they are more often white, with brindle ororange patches on the body, with evenly-marked heads.
