Text Appearing Before Image:
ntsman stations the hunters at separatepoints every hundred yards or so roundthe wood. A pack of hounds is sent into draw the quarry, and on the wolvesbreaking cover the nearest hunter slipshis dogs. These endeavour to seize theirprey by the neck, where they hold him untilthe hunter arrives, throws himself fromhis horse, and with his knife puts an endto the fray. Another method is to advance acrossthe open country at intervals of abouttwo hundred yards, slipping the dogs atany game they may put up. Trials are also held in Russia. Thesetake place in a large railed enclosure, thewolves being brought in carts similar toour deer carts. In this case a brace ofdogs is loosed on the wolf. The wholemerit of the course is when the houndscan overtake the wolf and pin him to theground, so that the keepers can securehim alive. It follows, therefore, that inthis case also the hounds must be of equalspeed, so that they reach the wolf simulta-neously ; one dog would, of course, beunable to hold him.
