Reinagle, R.A. of the Water Spaniel is given, and the differ-ence between the two animals portrayedis very striking, the Water Spaniel in theengraving differing but little from theSpringer of the day except in his curlycoat. The opinion expressed by the writerof The Sportsmans Cabinet is that thebreed originated from a cross between thelarge water dog and the Springing Spaniel,and this is probably correct, though Youatt,a notable authority, thinks that the crosswas with an English Setter. Possibly somestrains may have been established in thisway, and not differ very much in make andshape from those obtained from the crosswith the Spaniel, as it is well known thatSetters and Spaniels have a common origin.Considering the good character given tothese dogs by the writers of a century ago, 276 THE NEW BOOK OF THE DOG. it is rather hard to understand how theycame to fall into such disfavour as to be

At the com-mencement of the dog-showing epoch it is true that a fewspecimens were shown annually, the bestof these being probably Mr. Phineas Bul-locks Rover (k.c.s.b. 2,264), born in 1863.This dog had a wonderful show career, win-ning first prize at Birmingham in 1866,1870, 1873 ; at the Crystal Palacein 1871 and 1872 ; at Manchester in 1865 ;c.nd the Gold Medal at Paris the same year.Mr. James Farrow, probably the ablestauthority on show Spaniels of the presentday, declares that Rover was the bestSpaniel of this variety he ever saw, but hisdaughter, Flo (k.c.s.b. 2,256) can have been but little, if any, inferior.
