The white and blackvariety are, as a rule, slightly taller, smaller inloin and longer in head, but these differencesin the two varieties are being rapidly re-moved, and at no distant date the white andblack variety will probably be as correctin type and symmetry as the black varietynow is. 8o THE NEW BOOK OF THE DOG.

For very many years the black varietyhas been the better in type ; and in breed-ing, if blacks are desired, it will be saferas a general rule to insist upon the absenceof white and black blood in any of theimmediate ancestors of the sire and dam.But if, on the contrary, white and blackdogs are required, the proper course is tomake judicious crosses between the blackand white, and black varieties, and destroyany black puppies, unless they are re-quired for further crosses with white andblack blood. In any case the first cross islikely to produce both black and mis-markedwhite and black puppies ; but the latter,if bred back to the white and black blood,would generally produce well-marked whiteand black Newfoundlands. In mating, never be guided solely by thegood points of the dog and bitch. It is verydesirable that they should both have good points, the more good onesthe better, but it is moreimportant to ensure thatthey are di
