| Description |
English: The entire length of Bro Fjord in Lysekil Municipality, Sweden, as seen from an old abandoned granite quarry at Sandvik bay in the north end of the fjord. The north-south strecth seen in the photo is about 6 km (3.7 mi). The panorama is about 180°. This is one of about ten abandoned quarries along the fjord's shores. The red granite was much sought-after for construction works all over Europe during the first half of the 20th century because of its colour and the large feldspar and mica crystals (about 10 x 10 mm) that make any part of the cliffs glitter when the sun reflects off them.
This image illustrates how light, at different angles, is reflected off the feldspar crystals in the rock.  |
