Neither they nor the chubby little boy sitting on the sidewalk in the fore-ground suggest war; yet this is a scene of April, 1865, before Lees surrender. It is well-nigh impossiblefor a man surrounded by the sights and sounds and scents of every-day civilian life to realize what a touchof femininity meant to a sick soldier far from home after four years of rough campaigning.
