A PHOTOGRAPH \\THCH HELPS TO EXPLAIN THE NATIONAL PENSION ROLL The figure farthest to the right, with the white cross on his breast, was recognized as his own portrait, a generation after the war. byHenry W. Knight, of Company B, Seventh Maine VoUmteers, one of the veterans associated with the preparation of this Photo-graphic History. The cross is the corps badge of the Sixth Corps. The man on his right is Cephas McKelvey, of the EleventhPennsylvania Volunteers, who was wounded in the arm. Both men were convalescent. The personnel of these hospitals consistedof the surgeon in command, assisted by an executive and professional staff, and with the necessary number of stewards, clerks, attend-ants, <-ooks, laundry workers, guards, etc. Nursing and similar work was cither done by details of soldiers from the line of the armyor by civilians hired or volunteering for such duty.
