Text Appearing Before Image:
A DESOLATE GARDEN In the spring of lSlio. this charming Southern garden in Petersburgdid not bloom as had been its wont. The thundering cannon ofGrants besieging army had laid in ruins many a noble old mansion.Even where the non-combatants could dwell in comparative safety, they suffered Tor want of the necessaries of life. In the whole ofVirginia there was not enough of either meat or bread to sustainthe Confederate troops that had suffered far more severely thanthe citizens during the unusually hard winter just past. Hut afterthe war, the leaders, whose homes were in ruins, did not sil down indespair. The cities of the Southland arose in new beauty, and themanifold problems of a new era were studied with a courage Gradydoes well to praise. From the exhaustion of merciless war. fromwreckage such as this, the South rose renewed like the fabled phenix.
Text Appearing After Image:
COPYRIGHT 1911 REVIEW OF REVIEWS CO. A few steps across the garden, toward the same roofless home ofthe pane facing, opens sadder destruction of the exquisite Georgianarchitecture. Toward the close of the siege, many scenes like thisawaited the army photographer. Homes that had once reposedpeacefully in the light of luxury and sparkled with gaiety nowstood in ruins, grim tokens that Shermans terse definition ofwar is true. And yet the South fought on. Never has theworld seen greater devotion to a cause. Grander than this de-votion was the resolute meeting of the problems left by the war.An entirely new social order, in which Southern leaders profoundlydisbelieved, might well have appalled the stoutest heart. Multhe present prosperity of the whole section proves that heartswere not appalled. The dauntless energy of the Anglo-Saxonhas gained again a victory more precious than any won in war.
