Thelarge engraving is taken from a photograph of the vesselwhile at anchor ; of the smaller cuts, fig. i is a side viev/,fig. 2 a deck plan, fig. 3 a midship section, and fig. 4 asection outside of the armor-belt. 1\\e. Inipirieuse and her sister ship, the Warspite, whichare classified as armored cruisers of the first class, repre-sent a type of war vessel totally distinct from the citadelbattle-ships which preceded their introduction into theEnglish Navy, or the barbette Admirals and turret battle-ships which followed them. They are peculiar in havingfour distinct protected positions for heavy guns, separatedfrom one another, and unconnected by means of verticalarmor or other contrivance.
