5 ft. above the water. This struc-ture is covered by a water-tight deck, known as the maindeck of the ship.on which the cabins and living spacesare arranged. The space between the main and protec-tive deck is divided, as may be seen by reference to theprotective-deck plan, into many strong, water-tightspaces, most of which are not more than about 500 ft. ca-pacity. The spaces next to the ships side are principallycoal bunkers, and may, therefore, exclude largely anywater that should enter. The first line of defense isformed inside these coal bunkers by a complete girdle ofcotTerdams. which can be worked from the main deck.Tiicse it is intended to fill with water and cellulose ma-tenal. and as they are also minutely sub-divided, theeffects of damage by shot and consequent flooding maybe localized to a considerable extent.
