ndproduced very little popular stir. But uponJanuary 13, 1902, Professor Friedrich Delitzsch,of the University of Berlin, eminent alike as ascholar, a teacher, and the founder of the great-est school of Assyriologists in the world, de-livered a lecture in the Sing Academie in Berlinin the presence of the German emperor. Thelecture was a brilliant exposition of the achieve-ments of Assyriology in casting a valuable lightupon the Old Testament. Much of what he saidawakened no controversy. It was, indeed, inlarge part known already, and the interest laychiefly in the skill of its exposition by a master,who had himself made contributions of enduringquality to the science. But as the lecture wenton Professor Delitzsch spoke of the supposedoccurrence of monotheism in Babylonia, andthere entered upon a most disputed realm.
