f it; we translate it from the French : Sir, Being obliged to surrender Quebec to your arms, I have the honour torecommend our sick and wounded to your Exccellencys kindness and toask the execution of the cartel dSchange agreed upon by His Most Chris-tian Majesty and His Britannic Majesty. I beg Your Excellency to restassured of the high esteem and respectful consideration with which Ihave the honour to be Your most humble and obedient servant MONTCAIvM. This letter is found in the Townshend papers ; why should not theother one have been preserved in the same way if it had ever existed ? We state the case as we find it. We do not contend that Montcalmnever wrote the lines quoted first by Father Martin, and communicatedto Parkman by Abbe Bois. But we say that we have found no evidenceof their authenticity. Of course the Abbe Bois sincerity is not to beimpugned. But he may have been misled by some fabricated documentof the same stamp as the spurious letters published in I^oudon in 1777.

1759) UNE MORT GLORIEUSE 195 He gave also instructions to the effe6l that all his papersbe delivered in to the hands of M. de Levis, for whom heexpressed the highest regard. Having thus done with allearthly cares, he devoted his last moments to the thoughtsof God and eternity. During that gloomy night he wasoften heard praying aloud, and thanking the mercifulProvidence for having favoured him, in his hour of defeat, with the blessed consolations of faith. ^^ At five oclockin the morning he breathed his last. All was confusion in Quebec, and no workman could befound to make a coffin for the illustrious dead. Seeingthis, an old servant of the Ursulines, called the Bon-homme Michel, — weeping mightily, says the annalist ofthe Monastery,—contrived to make with a few boards akind of shapeless box. It was in this rude and humblebier that the mortal remains of Louis de Montcalm, Mar-quis de St-Veran, lieutenant-general of the King of France, commander of the Order of St. Louis, were laid.
