ulinary value, the dis-tinguished celestial is now a conspicuous featureof all the leading dog shows. In appearance the Chow Chow somewhatresembles a large and rather coarse - lookingPomeranian; not that the breed is by anymeans destitute of grace, but on account ofmany of the Pomeranian points being broad-ened. For instance, the skull of the Chow Chowis not only larger, as is but natural, he being the heavier dog, but it is likewise bigger bycomparison with that of the other. His muzzle,too, is more truncated, his ears less pointed andcoarser, his eyes deeper set in his head andsmaller, whilst his skull is plentifully endowedwith wrinkles. The Chow Chow, too, is builtupon far heavier lines than the Pomeranian;but the two varieties possess the tightly curledtail, the luxurious coat—that of the Chinesevariety being rather the harsher—and a similarvivacity and alertness of temperament whichnot infrequently causes unobservant persons toregard the two varieties as being identical with

This is the colourof the tongue and inside of the lips, which inthe case of the former variety are of a deeppurple, in fact almost black colour, whereasthose of the Pomeranian are of the orthodoxred. The dark interior of the mouth is a char-acteristic of most, if not all, Chinese breeds, andthe property being distinctly portrayed in thecase of the Chow Chow, leaves no grounds forbelieving that there is anything of a commonancestry between him and the Pomeranian. As regards his utility there is a good deal tobe said in favour of the Chow Chow, indepen-dently of course of his merits as a comestible,which are not regarded favourably in this 214 Christmas Rose — Chrysanthemum country.
