The doorway of the temjile is in the centre of thefacade, and rises nearly to a level with the elbows of the colossi; above the lintel,and facing the river, stands a figure of the god Ea, represented with a humanbody and the head of a sparrow-hawk, while two images of the king in profile,one on each side of the god, ofler him a figure of Truth. Tiie fiist hall, 130 feetlong by 58 feet broad, takes the place of the court surrounded by a colonnade which in other templesusually follows thepylon. Here eight Osi-ride figures, standingagainst as many squarepillars, appear to supportthe weight of the super-incumbent rock. Theirprofile catches the lightas it enters through theopen doorway, and inthe early morning, whenthe rising sun casts aruddy ray over theirfeatures, their faces be-come marvellously life-like.
