Strea:m sweep this beach, thus giving the resort a temperature notenjoyed by beadhes in the North. Jamestown Island. Of equal interest is the trip up the historicJames River on the way to Richmond. AtJamestown where the first permanent Englishsettlement was made, can be seen the ruinedtower and the old graveyard with its historictombs and inscriptions. Excavations at manypoints on the island have disclosed most inter-esting relics. The foundations of the govern-ors mansion and the House of Burgesses havebeen laid bare. The old powder magazine, partly submerged, may be seen. The ruinsof the old Ambler mansion are there, and themonument recently authorized by the UnitedStates Government, to cost $50,000, will beerected by 1907 and unveiled then. Alongthis river are the finest examples of colonialarchitecture in America. The peninsula, between the James River and the York River, has been the scene of more bloody conflictsthan have occurred on any territory of similarsize in the New World. 15

Around Hampton Roads. In addition to these points of interest thereare many side trips that can be taken. Atrip on the Chesapeake Bay is always ofvast interest. Here the great boats, veritabletraveling hotels, equippeid luxuriously, plytheir daily trip between Baltimore, Washing-ton and intermediate points. In the vicinityof the Jamestown Exposition site, nature andman have combined to create a territorysupremely attractive. If the visitor is unableto spare the time required to make thesespecial trips, he may take an hour or twoscruise around the harbors of Norfolk, Ports-mouth, Newport News and Old Point Com-fort, passing the scene of naval encountersin the colonial times when the English wereat war with Holland and France, where oursailors met the British in the Revolutionaryand 1812 Wars, and where the Monitor andthe Merrimac had their great battle for su-premacy, marking the epoch from whichdates the revolution of the fighting ships ofthe nations of the world.
