| Description |
English: The top of the spire, Salisbury Cathedral. Britain's tallest spire (123m/404ft) was built between AD1310-1333. The spire now leans 69.85cm (27.5ins) to the south and 44.44cm (17.5ins) to the west. This photo, taken with a 280mm lens on a 35mm camera, shows the top quarter of it. There are three decorated stone bands like the one visible near the bottom of the photo. The narrow green bands are part of the copper lightning conductor system. The anemometer is connected to 194004. The orange lights are for aircraft, and there appears to be a light sensor at the base of the cross. There is a trap door enabling the brave to climb out and ascend to the very top using the metal hoops set in the stonework. Peter Edds (Head of Buildings & Estates for Salisbury Cathedral) tells me: the cap stone is octagonal measures 1550 mm flat to flat, and weighs 2.25 tonnes. It is held in place by a vertical 40 mm mild steel rod which is anchored to cross members about 10 metres below the underside of the cap stone. |
