Description

From a 1905 postcard. 

 Raymond Mauny published a collection of early mentions of Rufisque in Notes Africaines  (Number 46, April, 1950, pp. 47-49).  Among them is this one from about 350 years ago:  "Rufisque compte alors environ 200 cases, et est peuplée de 300 hommes plus les femmes et les enfants.  Les gens vont presque nus.  On y voit des Catholiques (les Portugais entre autres, qui y sont nombreux), les circoncis qui approchent du Judaïsme ["Par d'autres textes... on sait qu'il s'agit ici de griots."], des Mahométans et des Idolâtres.  Ils vivent de riz, de mil et de maïs, mangent peu de viande mais beaucoup do poisson.  Les hommes y sont bien faits et les femmes de petite vertu.  Tous parlent un portugais corrompu."
"On tire du pays des cuirs, de la gomme, des plumes, de l'ivoire, de l'ambre gris, de l'indigo, de la civette, et de grosses toiles de coton rayées de bleu et blanc, que l'on revend a la Côte de l'Or."
