Klick here for a large view! Balos ist eine Bucht mit einer Lagune an der Nordwestseite der Halbinsel Gramvousa auf der Mittelmeerinsel Kreta (Griechenland). Die Halbinsel gehört zur Gemeinde Kissamos der Präfektur Chania. Gramvousa ist heute unbewohnt. Die letzte Ansiedlung vor der Halbinsel ist Kaliviani. Kurz dahinter am Hotel „Balos Beach“ endet die asphaltierte Straße und eine unbefestigte Piste zieht sich etwa 11 Kilometer an der Ostseite Gramvousas nordwärts. Auf halbem Weg befindet sich eine kleine Kapelle. Das dortige Tor über den Fahrweg ist unverschlossen. Am Ende der unbefestigten Straße befindet sich etwa 100 Meter über Meereshöhe eine Taverne mit Parkplatz. Zur Bucht von Balos führt von dort ein Trampelpfad mit anschließender Steintreppe nach Westen. Man benötigt etwa eine halbe Stunde, um den Strand zu erreichen. Für den Rückweg muss wegen des Aufstiegs mehr Zeit eingeplant werden. Eine weitere Möglichkeit den Strand von Balos zu erreichen bieten die von Kissamos verkehrenden Ausflugsschiffe, die auch die vorgelagerte Insel Imeri Gramvousa anlaufen. Auf dieser befindet sich ein altes venezianisches Kastell, das im 19. Jahrhundert zeitweise von Piraten genutzt wurde. Manche Reiseunternehmen preisen dieses Ausflugsziel deshalb auch als „Piratenbucht von Balos“ an. Bucht und Lagune selbst werden durch die kleine Halbinsel Tigani von Westen her vom offenen Meer abgeschirmt. Das höher gelegen Kap Tigani (übersetzt: „Pfanne“) ist nur durch eine schmale felsige Landzunge, hinter der sich die Lagune bilden konnte, mit der Halbinsel Gramvousa verbunden. Der Lagunenstrand besteht aus feinem weißen Muschel- und Korallensand. Da es keine Strandreinigung gibt, finden sich im Sand leider viele kleine Teerklumpen, die durch Westwinde angespült werden. Am Südrand der Lagune gibt es eine im Sommer geöffnete Taverne.
