An Indian, it seems, dearlyloves to make long speeches, and it seems to him thatan important pow-wow like the present one mightbe continued with advantage and pleasure for severaldays. On the present occasion, however, the authoritieshave explained beforehand that the visit is necessarilyvery short, and that the eloquence of the speakers mustbe restricted to very moderate limits. All the speeches,therefore, are extremely brief, and some of them areremarkable for their concise directness, heighteneddoubtless by the native interpreter, whose Englishvocabulary is small, and who supplements it largelywith American slang.
