Narrow the proposi-tion down to our so-called Colonial style, and webecome more than ever convinced that doorways,like men, have character and individuality and sowhen happily devised and carefully executed willlend distinction and charm to the building as awhole. Each is important, too, as the entranceto a home; there a welcome is given and first impres-sions are received; it seems to symbolize the houseas a whole. (46)
