andwhich can be used to shelter, protect, or support the bandsof robbers and murderers which infest those counties, willbe destroyed, or seized and appropriated to the use of theGovernment. Property situated at or near military posts,and in or near towns which can be protected by troops so asnot to be used by the bands of robbers, will not be destroyed,but will be appropriated to the use of such loyal or innocentpersons as may be made homeless by the acts of guerrillas orby the execution of this order. The commanding general isaware that some innocent persons must suffer from theseextreme measures, but such suffering is unavoidable, andwill be made as light as possible. A district of countryinhabited almost solely by rebels cannot be permitted to bemade a hiding-place for robbers and murderers, from whichto sally forth on their errands of rapine and death. General Order Number 11, to this effect was imme-diately issued by Brigadier-General Ewing, to be carried outwithin fifteen days.

DRESSMAKING DURING THE BLOCKADE known as myrtle, that grew teeming in low moist placesnear his mill. This myrtle yielded a nice gray for woolengoods. That the slaves might be well clad, the owners kept,according to the number of slaves owned, a number ofnegro women carding and spinning, and had looms run-ning all the time. Now and then a planter would be sofortunate as to secure a bale or more of white sheetingand osnaburgs from the cotton mills, in exchange forfarm products, which would be quite a lift, and givea little breathing-spell from the almost incessant whirr,hum, and clang of the spinning wheel and loom. Wide unbleached sheeting was also used for makingdresses, and when dyed a deep solid color and tastefullymade up the effect was quite handsome. On one occa-sion, when Mr. G had been fortunate in getting a bale of unbleached factory sheeting, Mrs. G gave to me, to her two oldest daughters, and a niece of hers,who was as one of the family, enough of the sheeting tomake each on
