Text Appearing Before Image:
the Pilgrims felt disheartened. The rough houseswhich they hastily raised could not protect them from theblasts of a New England winter; they had not proper foodor, indeed, any of the comforts of life. Sickness came uponthem, and at one time there were only seven well persons inthe little colony. Before the end of March, nearly half of thecolonists had died. These were buried near the first landing-place ; and lest the Indians should count their graves and sodiscover how few were yet living, grain was sown abovethem. She was the first to die of all who came in the Mayflower! Green above her is growing the field of wheat we have sown there, Better to hide from the Indian scouts the graves of our people, Lest they should count them and see how many already have perished!

The bigoted and haughtyprimate. Laud, Archbishop of Canterbury, controlledthe religious affairs of the realm, and was consequentlyinvested with powers which m.ight have wr
