He cannot walklong, but becomes soon fatigued. He likes his hammock,where he sits or lolls. He gives way to sudden gusts ofresentment, and becomes in a moment a madman, throwshimself into his hammock, and utters curses and impreca-tions upon all around him. He Hkes to indulge in sarcasmsupon absent persons, reads only light French literature, isa bold rider, and passionately fond of waltzing. He is fondof hearing himself talk and giving toasts. In adversity, anddestitute of aid from without, he is perfectly free from pas-sion and violence of temper. He then becomes mild, patient,docile, and even submissive. In a great measure he concealshis faults under the politeness of a man educated in theso-called beau monde, possesses an almost Asiatic talent fordissimulation, and understands mankind better than themass of his countrymen.
