Ill MODERN MEXICO HISTORICAL NOTE From the time of Cortes until her final revolt against Spain,in 1810, Mexico was under Spanish misrule and suffered fromunbearable taxation, corruption of the courts of justice, andthe granting of ofl&ces and privileges to those only who hadbeen born in Spain. The land which now forms the State ofTexas formerly belonged to Mexico. Texas fought herselffree and became a part of the United States. Disagreementsabout the boundary arose which led to war between Mexicoand this country in 1846-48. In i860, Mexico refused tomake payments on money borrowed from foreign nations.This resulted in war with France, wherein the French werevictors. Napoleon III hoped to found a French empire inAmerica, and gave the crown of Mexico to Maximilian,brother of the Emperor of Austria. On the withdrawal of theFrench troops, Maximilian fell into the hands of ex-PresidentJuarez and was executed. Juarez was then made President,and held this position until his death, in 187
