The train is j&rst running eastward, disappears 228 A GLACIER IN THE SELKIRK MOUNTAINS A GLACIER IN THE SELKIRK MOUNTAINS The Selkirk Range occupies the region inclosed betweenthe great loop of the Columbia and the Kootenay rivers, and is composed of a complexity of minor ranges inclosingdeep, forest-clad valleys and rising to rugged peaks adornedby silvery white snow-fields and glaciers. The forests, owingto the greater moisture deposited on the Selkirk Range, aremore luxuriant than those in the Rockies, and for similarreason the snow-fields and glaciers are more extensive. Thescenery, consequently, is superb, and as the mountains arenot of such stupendous magnitude as to preclude explorationby the ordinary tourist, there are few regions in the worldwhere the lover of the picturesque can make more delightfulexcursions. At the same time, there are peaks to be scaledand glaciers to be traversed which will call forth the bestabilities of the mountaineer. — Karl Baedeker.

Issuing from the Selkirks, another barrier, the GoldRange, had to be traversed; but this was a comparativelyeasy matter, as the Eagle Pass is a natural causewayamong the peaks for the iron road, although its discoverytaxed Walter Moberly to an extreme degree.
