he Mohawks. When hewas a boy, Sir William Johnson, superintendent of Indianaffairs in the colonies, became interested in him and sent himto school in Connecticut. He joined the Church of England,translated the Prayer Book and parts of the New Testa-ment into the Mohawk language, and at length became anardent missionary to his people. When the Revolutionary War broke out, he took the side ofthe British, and was of great assistance to them as the leaderof their Indian allies in the ferocious border fighting. Hetook part in the Cherry Valley and Minisink Massacresand was the terror of the outlying settlements of New Yorkand Pennsylvania. After the war, however, he did his bestto induce the Indians to live in peace with the whites. Henever forgot his interest in missions, and used the moneywhich he collected on a visit to England in building a,church, the first Episcopal Church erected in Upper Canada. John Fiske speaks of Brant as perhaps the greatestIndian of whom we have any knowledge.
