This boy, who was destined to become the mostpowerful ruler of his age, had inherited the rich provinces ofthe Netherlands five years before this time; five years laterhe inherited from his mother the kingdom of Spain with itsvast possessions in America; and in 1519, he was electedEmperor of Germany.

II HOW HOLLAND WON HERFREEDOM HISTORICAL NOTE At the death of Ferdinand of Aragon, Charles V of theHouse of Austria, who had inherited the Netherlands fromhis lather, became also ruler of Sjmin. His reign was on thewhole tolerable to the Netherlands. He had been broughtup in their province and they thought of him as one of them-selves. With his son, Philip II, to whom Charles resignedhis throne in 1556, the case was different. He was a gloomy,conscientious bigot, with neither sympathy nor liking for theliberty-loving Dutch. The doctrines of Martin Luther weremaking great headway in the country, and to combat themPhilip II introduced, or revived, the terrible Inquisition.Moreover, he filled the chief oflSces with Spaniards andquartered Spanish soldiers upon the people.
