| Description |
The Shoreland Hotel, now a University of Chicago dorm. To the left you can see the building I live in—the Flamingo Hotel, now Flamingo Apartments. Top photo taken 1929. You never really read about this, but I've been constantly struck when doing these "then and now" shots by how few trees there were in Chicago (and probably in most cities) in the early part of the century. It made for better photographs, but I think it also gave off a creepy, bombed-out feel. (I think modern subdivisions are unpleasant for the same reason; they'll be more bearable once the trees grow back.) Yet another reason I'm glad I'm alive today and not 50 or 100 years ago.
