Many years ago, I checked into a hotel in a small desert town. After changing into PJs, I went to retrieve my slippers, casually thrown under the sink. Touching a spider web, I glanced down, only to see a large black widow spider 6 inches from my slippers. "Calm down. You're OK!" I reassured myself. "It's just under the sink. No one ever cleans there". Safely ensconced in the middle of the bed, I clicked the TV remote and settled in for an evening of movie watching - when I noticed the even larger black widow spider on a web attached to the TV! Afraid to move, I quickly called the front desk, and had them transfer me immediately to another room. After an hour convincing myself that the new room and all my belongings were spiderless, I tried to fall asleep. Hours later, I finally drifted off, only to open my eyes a short time later and see a gigantic spider inches from my face! As it turned out, it was a hypnogogic hallucination - a weird sleep phenomena, where you wake before your brain stops dreaming - but it remains one of the scariest moments in my life. What better to share for Macro Monday's Halloween theme? |
