Summary edit

Description
English: Early British cavity magnetron, probably the original GEC Type E-1189 developed by H. A. H. Boot and J. T. Randall in Birmigham in May-June 1940, or the similar production Type E-1198 (March 1941 onwards). The paired glass appendages (upper right) contain cathode filaments leads, the opposite single appendage (lower left) is the output. Although others knew of the concept and made similar prototypes in the late 1930s, only the GEC team was able to reach practical output levels (15KW pulsed for the E-1189) required for radar applications. The papers dated August 1941, describing the 1198 valve, were compiled when the E-1198 was already produced in numbers.
