at the MedicalSchool of the Charing Cross Hospital. In 1845he passed his first examination at the Universityof London for the degree of M.B., taking honorsin physiology; and in the following year wasappointed Assistant-Surgeon to the Victory forservice at Haslar Hospital. In 1847 ne was aP*pointed Assistant-Surgeon to H.M.S. Rattlesnake,and spent the greater part of the ensuing threeyears off the eastern coast of Australia. In 1851 hewas elected a Fellow of the Royal Society, receiv-ing one of the Royal medals next year. In 1855he was appointed Professor of Natural History inthe Royal School of Mines; Fullerian Professorof Physiology to the Royal Institution, and Ex-aminer in Physiology and Comparative Anatomyto the University of London. In 1858 he was ap-pointed Groonian Lecturer to the Royal Society,and chose for his subject the Theory of the Ver-tebrate Skull. In i860 he delivered a course oflectures to working-men nt the School of Mines,his subject being Tl Relation of Man to the

The views which he tnen pro-pounded gave rise to much vehement controversy.In 1862 he delivered another course of lectures toworking-men, which were subsequently publishedunder the title of Lectures on our Knowledge of theCauses of the Phenomena of Organic Nature. In1870 he was elected a member of the LondonSchool Board, where he took an active part inthe opposition to denominational teaching. In1872 he was elected Lord Rector of AberdeenUniversity; and in 1873 Secretary of the RoyalSociety, of which he was chosen President in1883. In 1881 he was appointed Inspector of Salm-on Fisheries; but in 1885 he was compelled byill-health to resign. In 1890 he wrote to the Timesseverely criticising General Booths DarkestEngland scheme. In 1892 he was called to thePrivy Council.
