English: On 3 August 1927, 'The Sydney Morning Herald' reported that the American ship, CHILLICOTHE, had encountered problems at sea. The CHILLICOTHE had a cargo of lumber and the report details that the crew members complained of the conditions on board the vessel. The vessel had faced dangerous gales which caused a leak and it is possible that this photograph depicts the moments after this event, when CHILLICOTHE sailed into Sydney Harbour behind the tug CHAMPION on 2 August 1927.

This photo is part of the Australian National Maritime Museum’s Samuel J. Hood Studio collection. Sam Hood (1872-1953) was a Sydney photographer with a passion for ships. His 60-year career spanned the romantic age of sail and two world wars. The photos in the collection were taken mainly in Sydney and Newcastle during the first half of the 20th century.
