Summary edit

Description
English: Three piers in one, Ryde The first of Britain's great pleasure piers to be built, opening on the 26th July 1814; allowing visitors to the island a dry walkway instead of having to be carried on the back of a porter followed by up to half a mile of wet sand. It grew in length from 527m to 681m as the ships grew larger. The second pier adjacent to the first opened on 29th August 1864 to carry a horse drawn tramway. This was electrified later in the 19th century. The third pier, adjacent to the second was opened on 12th July 1880 and carried the steam railway. The central "tramway pier" closed in 1969 and was partly dismantled. http://www.theheritagetrail.co.uk/piers/ryde%20pier.htm
