ce seemedto me to cross the Atlantic. McCandlass was a big bully, but not a rank coward. He jumped into the room withtwo hells in his eyes, his gun almost levelled to shoot theheart out of me, but he wasnt quick enough. The Lordmust have delayed him, and my rifle ball tore the top ofhis head oflF. There was a dead silence as he fell backthrough the doorway. I broke one mans arm. He hadhis fingers round my throat and was tearing at it like awildcat. Then I went wild as a grizzly—some one struckme across the breast with a rifle and I felt the bloodrush from my nose, ears and mouth. Then I got ugly, bad, horrible, as all of them put together—cruel, crazy, sorry that there wasnt a roomful more of them—and Igot a bowie somehow into my hand. Then it was allclouds, smoke, flame, blood, runaway stars, br
