Notes | Tiles with the same design are included in a pastiche assemblage of tiles that decorate an exterior wall of the shrine of Eyüp just outside the walls of Istanbul (see: en:Eyüp Sultan Mosque). The building for which the tiles were originally made is not known. Walter Denny (2006) has speculated that one possibility is the en:Mihrimah Sultan Mosque (Edirnekapı) near the Edirne Gate in the city walls of Istanbul. This mosque now has no tiled revetments. Many museums have examples of these tiles. The Victoria and Albert Museum in London has a panel of 24 tiles (Acc. Num. 401:1 to 24-1900), the David Collection in Copenhagen has a panel of tiles (Acc. Num. 41/1968) and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York has a single tile (Acc. Num. 64.27.17). The Calouste Gulbenkian Collection in Lisbon has a panel of 10 tiles (Acc. num. 1709) see: Queiroz Ribeiro, Maria (2009) Iznik pottery and tiles in the Calouste Gulbenkian collection, Lisbon: Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, ISBN 978-972-8848-58-3, page 119 fig. 68. | |||||||||||||||||||||||
